Blue Moon for Spirit Path

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on September 17, 2016

A Blue Moon reading and book launch were the features of FVPS’s first poetry night after the summer break, September 12th.

Brayden Sawatzky, Erin Fisher and Michael Linburg, co-creators of the just published anthology Spirit Path began the evening by each reading selections from their segments of the book.

Brayden intrigued us all with four poems from his “Garden of Poets” section—21 poems that describe inspiration he has gained from the society and individual members of it. He supplements these poems with quotes from the Bible and other sources. What a gracious and affirming beginning to a book by three authors.

He also read from other sections of the book. A poem of his I found particularly poignant begins:

“On highways to our destinations
traveling with our heaviness
wishing for lightness of being
our cares will slow us to a stop
dangerously close to devastation…” – from “Lightness of Being” – p. 61.

Erin Fisher surprised us all by presenting writings of hers longer than just a few lines. But even in the longer selections, her poems retain the cryptic distillation of which she is such a master. The three sections: “early, early words,” “early words,” and “later words” illustrate how she has grown in the skill of editing herself, stripping away all that is extraneous to the sinew and bone of metaphor and suggestion. To wit:

“in my mind’s eye a friend,
a bond that cannot be grasped,
would you interrupt every snowflake
to verify its beauty?” – from “early words” p. 156.

Michael Linburg (Photo © 2016 by V. Nesdoly)

Michael Linburg entertained, probed, and inspired us with his well-crafted pieces. He delivered the clever ending to his poem “Randomness” with just the amount of deadpan its punchline wanted:

“And if by chance
You happen to find
That things are not falling
The way you want
There is the distinct possibility
That it was me” – “from “Randomness,” p. 214.

But it was his poem “I Am,” full of its hard-earned affirmations that will stick with me long past the evening.

Well done, you three (and Alvin Ens, who got the book ready for the press)! This 266-page book sells for $20. Contact Brayden Sawatzky for details on how to get your own copy.

After a short break for refreshments, catching up, buying books etc., we reassembled for the open mic portion of the evening. Thirteen poets delivered the usual varied smorgasbord of poems, from our founder Donna Bishop’s rendition of “Encouragement’ to Terry Broadworth’s poem about learning to love herself. (Only 12 are pictured. I read too but there is no photographic proof.)

Four poets shared several poems each during a reading time.

We also had a table where we showed off our books, passed out brochures to anyone wanting information, chatted with each other, and even wrote a little poetry.

Last Blue Moon of 2014 launches Of Wind and Flame

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on October 8, 2014

A book launch is always exciting. When that book is the project of two poets, the energy and joy is doubled. Monday, October 6th was such a time for Brayden Sawatzky and Bridget Porter Oldale as they unveiled their joint project Of Wind and Flame. It’s a book not only easy on the eye, but a pleasure to the ear as well.

Brayden began the reading, modestly introducing himself as the warmup act before the main feature. He chose selections from the book that challenged us “…to touch the heart of ancient ways / for spirit paths to call your name” (from “Ancient Ways” p. 66); to “follow your heart / into the adventure of love” (from “With All of Your Heart” p. 79); and to build the bonfires that “…dance / upon the tombs of our regrets” (from “Koinonia” p. 93).

Bridget charmed us all with her lilitingly British-accented reading of these Celtic flavoured poems:

Drums, drums, multiple drums
The wizards and the witches in the wind
are crying all the way from Quileute to Zennor, … (from “Missal for Earthsaints,” p. 15);

and

You are us, O Blaidd, O Wolf
You are family, clan and tribe.

Maided Allaidh, O dear wild dog,
… I behold you now
on Wolfmoon Day… (from “Merlin’s Song to the Wolf” p. 21);

and my favourite:

…this cleaning of the board and trenchers
after all are done with eating and have
returned to work and to the world—
perhaps more sacred even than the happy
preparation… (from “Washing Up” p. 61).

This book is a treasure! You’ll want one. I’ll post purchase information as soon as I get it.

Coffee, cake (provided by our founder Donna Bishop), and other refreshments were followed by the open mic part of the night. Thirteen readers read pieces that went the gamut from exploring the meaning of Saskatchewan’s “Living Sky” to a tongue-in-cheek look at how the world would run if God were a woman.

Thanks so much to Stuart Oldale for providing a good quality mic for the evening!

It’s hard to believe that the 2014 reading year is now over. But the high note on which the year ended augurs well for next year. Plans are underway. The Fraser Valley Poets Society has booked the library for the following reading dates in 2015:

  • March 23
  • April 13
  • May 4
  • June 15
  • September 14

Another important event is just around the corner as well. Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday, October 20th, at 1:30 p.m. in the Clearbrook Library Seminar Room. Members, please come out to review the year that was and help make plans for the future!

MSA PPS poets celebrate the season

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on November 30, 2012

We had our last MSA PPS event of 2012—a Christmas potluck—on Wednesday, November 28th.  Rudy and Ruth-Ann graciously hosted us in their beautiful home. Thank you so much!

There were turkey and fixings, salads, veggie dishes and, of course, dessert. Brayden began the meal by reading a poem prayer he composed for the occasion.

After dinner we gathered around in the living room for a gift exchange/game. Each person got to pick a wrapped gift when his or her name was drawn.

Though the rules of the gift exchange allowed any person, at their turn, to steal anyone else’s gift instead of unwrapping a new one, the exchange proceeded very civilly until near the end, when cheeky Nicholas stole Erin’s gift card. It all ended happily when Erin unwrapped a book that pleased her just as well.

November 28th would have been our friend Thurlow’s 100th birthday! We remembered him with a toast by Brayden, a tribute by Erin and the singing of Happy Birthday. How he would have enjoyed this celebration. We do miss him!

The MSA Poets Potpourri Society now takes a break until March.

Our first reading of 2013 is scheduled for Monday, March 11th at the Clearbrook Library Meeting Room, 6:30-8:30.

Please check back here for more details closer to the date.
