Great turnout for May 2nd Open Mic

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on May 4, 2016

The multi-purpose room of the Clearbrook Library came alive with the sound of words Monday night, May 2nd. This third Poetry Open Mic night of 2016 for the Fraser Valley Poets Society included poems about nature, mothers, retirement, feeling blue, and feeling wonderful. There were poetic stories of knights, dragons, swords, and shaman. There were pieces about bats, mountains, drops, a smile, football, and yoga. The variety was a great indicator of the variety of poets in attendance.

FVPS Director Terry Broadworth did a great job of emceeing the evening. She introduced each of the eighteen open mic readers and kept the program on track for the enjoyment of the audience of about 50.  A mid-evening break for coffee and goodies gave opportunity for visiting and networking. (Click on any photo to enlarge.)

Our next Poetry Open Mic night is Monday, May 30th at the Clearbrook Library, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

If you’re a local poet who would like to read at our one of our open mic poetry nights, we’d love to have you! You don’t have to be a Fraser Valley Poets Society member to join in.

Book launch a 2015 highlight

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on November 5, 2015

The meeting room at the Clearbrook Library was buzzing with excitement Monday night, November 2nd, for the launch of Terry Broadworth’s debut collection of poems, A Poets Passion Revisited.

Over 50 friends, supporters and FVPS members listened to her read from her collection—poems about people, nature, life, love and travel. Especially enjoyable were her poems about people—co-workers and family members—full of warmth, humour, and the caring that came full circle to bless her back in the many friends that came out to enjoy this special day with her.

After a 30-minute break of more celebrating with cake, assorted goodies, chatting, book buying and signing (with Ted Goodrich doing brisk business at the book table), we went into the Open Mic part of the evening.

Miss Miya started us off by taking us back, with her charming get-up and poems, to the ’60s. Jody and Satwant read selections from Terry’s book, Violet shared several poems about the writing life, Erin’s reading was short and thought-provoking as usual, Alvin opined about the results of the recent election, Michael recited one of his writings by memory, and Brayden ended the evening by reading “Valley Fall,” a beautiful ode to the season from the FVPS anthology River of Words.

Thanks to all who came out and made this evening a special event, and to Terry for the beautiful book and festive touches!

FVPS Founder Launches Book at 90

Posted by Violet Nesdoly on September 10, 2014

A crowd of friends, family, and Fraser Valley Poets Society members were on hand Monday, September 8th, to launch Encouragement: Writings by Donna Bishop with tributes and poems by friends.

Donna’s cab was late and it felt like waiting for the bride! A round of applause met her entry and the program began. President Brayden Sawatzky led off by welcoming everyone and reading a poem (notice the vintage Poets Potpourri buttons on his hat).

Editor of the book Alvin Ens explained how he assembled the book by consulting with Donna and her family, looking through old PPS anthologies, contacting former members, and canvassing all and sundry for photos.

Violet Nesdoly, co-editor, talked about the member poems section and read snippets to show the book’s variety and whet readers’ appetites for more.

Rhonda Nicholls, Donna’s daughter, expressed her family’s thanks for the work put into the book by FVPS members. “You managed to capture the essence of who Mom is,” she told Ens.

Then Donna took the mic and, after  opening comments, read selections from Encouragement.  Just two weeks shy of her 90th birthday, her voice was strong, her reading clear, and she kept us all spellbound.

Shelley Haggard and Jaye Low (one of PPS’s former presidents) rounded out the first half of the evening by giving Donna their congratulations and reading.

During the second half of the program, FVPS contributors read their tributes or poems  from the anthology part of the book. A long-time family friend concluded the evening with his memories and warm congratulations.  The time to disband came much too soon!

Our  2014 Blue Moon Reading Series concludes with a final reading on October 6th when Brayden Sawatzky and Bridget Porter Oldale will launch a book. Mark your calendars and plan to celebrate with us the birth of another volume of Canadian poetry!
